There will always be wine where there is tapas! Wine is as important as olive oil and Iberian ham in Spanish cuisine. Travel from one side of the country to another and you’ll find  vineyards nearly everywhere.

Spain is the largest wine producing country in the world in terms of the sheer area cultivated, with 1,200,000 hectares of vineyards, and the third largest in terms of volumes of wine produced. The average farmland is 3.3 hectares, with the smallest farms found in Galicia and the largest found in Murcia. The four regions of Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, and Catalonia account for more than 70% of the Spanish vineyard.

A wide variety of Spanish wines can be found due to the variations in the climate: fresh and fragrant rosés, powerful and fruity reds, but also sweet wines and sparkling wines such as cava. The main grape varieties are considered international references, such as Tempranillo, the emblematic grape from La Rioja, the Airen, an exclusive white grape from Castilla-La-Mancha, Albariño from Galicia, Grenache from Aragon and Palomino and Pedro Ximénes for sherry.
