Day 1 : Porto- Vila Nova de Gaia

Upon your arrival at Porto airport, you collect your rental vehicle at the airport counter and drive to Vila Nova de Gaia, to the heart of the Port wine production.

Day 2 : Porto

Half-day guided city tour of Porto.

Walking tour of the old city of Porto, the Clérigos tower, icon of the city, the São Bento train station famous for its sumptuous azulejos, Portuguese painted tin-glazed ceramic tile-work, and the or cathedral. You will visit of the São Francisco church known for its carved gold decorations (entrance included). You continue to the Ribeira district, a maze of small winding and colourful streets in the centre, the iconic square of the same name which opens onto the waterfront and offers a grandiose panorama of the Douro River and its iron bridges.

You head to Vila Nova de Gaia wine cellars and check Ramos Pinto winery where you get a tasting of 2 Port wines (one white and one red).

Day 3 : Penafiel - Quinta de Aveleda - Sabrosa

Visit to Quinta de Aveleda including a wine tasting.

The official reference of the Alto-Minho region and one of the most important producers of green wine in the area for 300 years, Quinta de Aveleda was awarded in 2011 in the category “Architecture, Parks and Gardens”. With a neo-classical style construction from the beginning of the 19th century, it is renowned both for its architectural heritage and for its parks and gardens where rare species flourish, some of which are over a hundred years old.

After a free visit of Amarante, the Roman city and its picturesque bridge bathing into Tamego river, you continue further into the wine estate of Porto, Sabrosa, home to rich palace residences including the birthplace of Fernão de Magalhães better known as Magellan.

Day 4 : Minho Region: Barcelos - Braga - Guimarães

A land of legends, Barcelos owes its fame in part to the red ceramic rooster that struts around on the country’s artifact products and which has become over time a true national icon. In Barcelos, more than anywhere else, craftsmanship has been key since medieval times and every Thursday there is a big market. Capital of popular art, ceramists, basket-makers, sculptors, hatters and hatters flock come to the market every week to show off their colorful home-made art and crafts under the watchful eye of Nossa Senhora do Terço.

You will get a chance to see Braga and the Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary, recently classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Take time to visit this majestic place of pilgrimage on your way to Braga. Despite being one of the oldest cities in Portugal, Braga is lively, young and dynamic. Founded by Augustus more than 2,000 years ago, it was located on one of the main Roman roads of the Iberian Peninsula and was the administrative seat of the Empire. Later, it was designated as the capital of the Roman province of Gallaecia, today’s Galicia.

You then stop in the city of Guimarães, with free time yo visit the birthplace of Portugal. This long history is reflected in the diversity of the city’s national monuments and historic buildings.

Explore the historic centre with its lower part and medieval streets and then the upper part to visit the Dukes of Bragança’s palace and the castle. Afterwards, head to the Parc de la Penha to enjoy the exceptional views.

Day 5 : Douro Valley - Quinta da Pacheca

You’ll enjoy exploring the Douro valley. Today you will get a guided tour of the Quinta da Pacheca (winery) with tasting of 2 Douro wines and 2 Port wines.

Typical regional lunch served at the Quinta’s restaurant (starter, main course, dessert, coffee) accompanied by a selection of house wine.

During the month of September (date varies according to the year), the Quinta offers a special visit to celebrate the grape harvest: harvesting and traditional crushing of the grapes on the vines (please contact us for more information).

Day 6 : Douro Valley - Pinhão - Quinta da Panascal

As you explore further the Douro Valley, you head to the wine estate of the Fonseca House. Quinta do Panascal winery is one of the main players in the production of Vintage Port thanks to a judicious blend of several vineyards. Panascal brings its rich and enveloping fruity character, woven on a jammy, velvety weave.

Visit the property in the heart of the vineyards overlooking Tàvora River, with audio-guides in your own language. The tour lasts about 30 minutes and ends with a tasting of a Vintage Port (Tawny 10 years old).

Mini cruise on the Douro River departing from Pinhão aboard the Rabelo, a small wooden boat typical of the region which otherwise transported the wine in barrels to the Vila Nova de Gaia Cellars to age. This will offer you a different perspective and allow you to soak up its landscapes where vineyards predominate.

The tour will include:

  • Departure of the cruise on the Rabelo boat
  • Upstream navigation to the mouth of the Tua River
  • Journey back to Pinhão Quay
  • Glass of Port or Muscat wine served on board

Day 7 : Douro Valley - Quinta da Murganheira

Visit of a renowned cellar specialized in the elaboration of Portuguese “champagne“. Quinta da Murganheira is located very close to Ucanha, a small village bordering two regions: the Douro and the Beira, where the fertile lands of the Varosa Valley favor the production of this wine. The natural cellar built in the rock is worth a visit on its own. Wine tasting will include 4 house sparkling wines (2 classics and 2 Prestige vintages) at the end of the visit.

*Duration of the visit: approx. 45 minutes

Arrival in the small village of Favaios in the heart of the Douro wine region, visit a traditional bakery to taste bread baked over a wood fire, then discover a wine cooperative to learn all about the industrial production of the region’s wine (Muscat) and taste it.

Lunch in a Quinta (rural farm) for a regional and country lunch. In the early afternoon visit of its wine library for a historical trip on the wine culture of the Douro alto region followed by a wine tasting.

Day 8 : Porto Airport

Today you head back to the Porto Airport and drop off  your rental car before to board your flight home.
